PRACTICAL – Design Realisation
20 mins – Develop 2D Exhibition Designs / 5 mins Blog

My 2D design has gone through some changes but I think my new concept will be more effective. I will be printing two images in with different effects and have a banner with TIMOR LESTE tying the images together. Each of the images will be printed at about A2 size then attached to MDF by a printing company. When displayed each of the different images will be attached to the wall at different depths by attaching wooden sides. Lighting may be applied to give shadows to exaggerate the depths.

This video was a great insight to seeing exactly what Billie was describing to me. Now I know what to ask for from printing companies and I can see how that size can be affective. Was good to know that the whole thing is protected from heat and humidity... Will come in handy in Darwin :)

Week 9 2D Design

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Realisation

PRODUCING A RANGE - 15 mins
Sketch in your Visual Diary or Illustrator

1. Clear rendition of 3 invitation / flyer layouts using the logo & text supplied
2. The design must have space for sponsor logos
3. CDU logo must be on the bottom right – check branding rules

BLOG - 15 mins
Each student post the group results in your blog with images and descriptive text

The first thought I wanted to do with my versions of invites I wanted to use the same brush stroke and the red used in the headline to create an image of the “Hotlands” to compliment our headline. I wanted most of the background white so all information was legible.

PRACTICAL – Design Realisation

30 mins – Illustrator / 10 mins Presentations / 10 mins Blog

1. Layout your version of all 3 designs decided on in the group exercise
2. Show your results to the class
3. Blog screenshots of your work

Here are my first 3 originals layouts.

After the class all shared their different designs if was agreed that Rachel’s idea to use paint splotches and Billie’s idea of using a brush stroke frame to tie the front and back of the invitation together would be good if merged. After talking with Mark it was decided not to incorporate the two designs because it made the frame too heavy so instead i worked on the levels of splotches and reducing the frame. Here are my versions.

Week 9 3D Design

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Realisation
PRODUCING A RANGE - 25 mins

1. Present and discuss your 3D exhibition piece(s) with the class (5 mins each)
2. How many of you are collaborating with other schools?

No one in the group is collaborating with other schools.

PRACTICAL – Design Realisation
30 mins

1. Work on your own for the exhibition

2. Make a list of your proposed exhibition works

I would like to make two more prototypes
Prototype1: Full model Timor house
Prototype2: Half model attached to poster

3. Itemise:

-         Please note these findings are based on a prototype if needed the final product may have different results

• Dimensions:
Prototype1: Width-20cm, height – 30cm, depth – 20cm
Prototype2: Background A3, height – 30cm, width – 15cm, depth – 5cm.

• Display requirements (hanging / floor space / special FX / audio / video)
Prototype1: Table
Prototype2: Hanging on wall

• A short description of the concept
Prototype1: Full model Timor house
Prototype2: Model that half of the house that comes off the wall

• The name of the piece
Not sure yet

• Materials used
Bolsa wood
PVA glue
Sticks
Stanley knife

4. Save this as a Word doc and copy to the SHARE folder for the PRINT group
5. Blog all the above

I am still unsure how I want to  build the roof of my Timor House. This video provided some ideas of what i can do with pop sticks to give the angles i need to make. The camera work in the video is a little wobbly. Wasn't good trying to watch when I was hung over.... motion sickness hahah

Week 8 3D Design

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Realisation

Selecting:
Materials – Paddle pop-sticks, twigs
Tools – Stanley knife,
Equipment - Balsa wood

PRACTICAL – Concept Realisation

Work on your 3D Exhibition piece(s)

So far as one of my prototypes I used a paper drawing that I did to make the image come off the background. I drew the front first and then measured how wide I would want the house. Then i added extra space to make folds and glue it to the background image and to the front image of the house.

To see  how to use balsa wood and different ways to use it I found this video. This video was insightful because the guy talks about how to give it texture and that you can just use a craft knife to get the shapes you need in the balsa wood. Also he suggest type of glue that will be best to use.

Week 8 2D Design

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Realisation

For my 2D design for the exhibition I will be using

Selecting:
Materials – A3 Poster
Tools -  Illustrator, Photos,
Equipment - Printer, Paper

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Realisation
PRODUCING A RANGE

We had to give 3 clear renditions of our headline however Mark suggested my final idea didn’t need any more tweaking.

Here is my final design
PRACTICAL – Design Realisation

We had to continue to work on the headline however  as I said before I was happy with my final design so I decided to work on my 2D design for the exhibition because I wasn’t happy with my first prototype.  Below is an image of my first concept and below that is the one I worked on in class which is not yet complete.

Week 7 2D Design

Practical – Design Communication

DESIGN a headline & tagline draft for the student exhibition.

Make a list of 2 key concepts you are trying to communicate

Make a list of 2 key feelings your trying to communicate

REFINE your headline to communicate these 4 things
Prepare to present your communication skills to the class.
Upload all this content to your blog

In this week’s class we have to refine one of our headline and tagline to communicate 2 key concepts and 2 key feelings. I have decided my two concepts will be;

  • Design to appear clean cut.
  • Represent the Territory’s outback

Two feelings I want to converse are;
  • Inspiring
  • Curiosity
To demonstrate my concepts I changed the colour of the first design from being black and red to an earthy red and amber colour. I also changed the way I created the the shape for the 2 and made it bigger to put more emphasis on it.

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Investigation

Using a scale of 1 – 10,
each group assigns a quantitative rating for all the designs,
based on the three criteria below
1. Clear rendition of 2 key concepts
2. Clear rendition of 2 key feelings
3. Immediate visual appeal
Each student post the group results in your blog

Week 7 3D Design

Practical – Design Communication

Choose one design from last week’s 2 sketched designs (sports & fashion)

Make a list of 2 key concepts you are trying to communicate

Make a list of 2 key feelings your trying to communicate

REFINE your design concept to communicate these 4 things
Prepare to present your communication skills to the class.
Upload all this content to your blog

In this week’s class we have to refine one of our sketched designs from last week to communicate 2 key concepts and 2 key feelings. I have decided my two concepts will be
  • Airflow
  • Abstract
Two feelings I want to converse are;
  • Excitement
  • Togetherness

To refine my previous design to accommodate the concepts I wanted to portray, I removed the walls of the house and extended the floor space for the soccer floor. In a hot environment this would be an interesting way to enjoy sport our of the sun but still getting the outside surroundings and fresh air. I probably  need to incorporate some sort of netting to ensure the ball wouldn't be constantly kicked out of the area.

Sometimes I find that when I try to refine my ideas I get stuck and hit a lot of brick walls. I catch myself looking at others designs and thinking how far did their original idea come for it to be this refined concept. Also when I look at others designs my mind flows with ways to refine it or modify it but with my own ideas there just seems to be no spark to manipulating my original thought. Here is a video I found that explained to me why these things happen. Also the animation is fantastic kept my attention and thoroughly impressed me.
